Kids and Homework

Since I first had my daughter, I've been excited to be able to help her with her homework.  I remember my parents helping me with mine and for some reason I felt a connection with them in regards to it and it helped me feel better about my accomplishment.  I was always lucky because my parents were able to do this for me.  I know some parents are not, or do not believe they should for various reasons.  I found it lucky.  I was even lucky enough to have my father help me with my calculous homework in college.  I felt extremely blessed that I was able to go home and have my dad want to help me with that instead of going to a teachers aid or help group.

So, I've contemplated this a lot with my children.  I'm super excited to help them with the science aspect of things and love doing little science projects with them.  I'm also a super artsy crafty person and love doing those types of things.  But, like I said in my last post, I need to step it up if I want to ensure I'm helping them in things that I don't have that much knowledge about.  Grammar, history, social studies.

So, what is your philosophy on as a parent on helping kids with their homework?  How do you manage it? I hear all the time that kids homework is getting out of control and harder and harder for parents to help out.  This scares me a bit as my kids have a little way to go before they are in school far enough where they get hours on end of homework.

What do you do when you can't help?

What are your feelings about scheduling homework and when to do it?

Tricks and tips anyone want to share?
