How Social Media has made us less ignorant

When I first became a mom I would have never realized how automatically disconnected from the world I would become.  I used to be able to easily turn on the news, flip through the paper, or even sit down for 30 minutes to catch up on the latest news.  I had my little routine of turning on the news at 5pm and then watching till 6 or 7pm.  Elle even got sick of the sight of Brian Williams as he was my go to guy for world news.  Elle was one year old and could articulate "No Brian Williams!"   I was happy she even knew who he was.  I'm a MSNBC kinda gal and I like getting snid-bits of news through their programing.

When I was working, I could easily check-in during breaks to see what was going on in the world.  I'm definitely not a sponge when it comes to soaking up the news or facts, but I can at least have a semblance of what was happening.

After I had my second child, David, all went down hill from there.  I was staying at home preeminently and my nightly Brian Williams visit, and even checking out local news flew, out the window.  We don't receive the paper (old school) and sometimes surfing through the myriad news articles on the web doesn't even "float-my-boat".  When you are interrupted every two seconds it's somewhat difficult to read an article.

Then the invention of Facebook and Twitter changed all that for me forever!  Twitter is basically micro-blogging in 140 characters or less.  Who doesn't have time to read 140 characters?  I can't think of anyone. I love Twitter because you can catch up on pretty much anything you want in short concise verbiage.  Then you can really know what's going on without even having to know the whole story.  Sometimes the whole story gets in the way of the main topic anyway, so as long as you know the main facts, it's pretty good news!

Facebook has recently gotten better about this, as you are able to subscribe to new affiliates, and more and more reporters are utilizing it to express news worthy information.  Before it was more of a social site for friends.  But, I'm beginning to find myself using it as more of a news feed.

I rarely use YouTube for news information, but I definitely could.  But, once again, you are then having to sit through a "program" instead of reading micro-blogs.  On the other hand, YouTube is fabulous as an online classroom!  If you want to teach yourself about anything and everything you might want to check in with YouTube before you spend your hard earned money on a class.  I've learned so many random things from YouTube the possibilities are endless!

The wonderful thing about Facebook is that you can subscribe to multiple news stations or reporters and they will list the up-to date facts in your news feed.  How awesome is that!  This way you don't need to go to five or six different sites to get all the news.  You automatically just receive the facts and the main topics of the day.

If you're really fancy, you can even get your Twitter feeds sent directly to your Facebook page and have a one-stop shop!

I just can't say enough positive things about it.  It's even given me a new form of employment and it's amazing to me how many people are seeking out this type of help for their own business.

If you want to keep up with the news without having the time to really focus on more than two or three sentences, utilize your news feeds from social media.  Social media doesn't always mean talking about what you ate for dinner.  It means being informed about what the world is doing and the people who live in it.

If anyone wants any tips on how to do this please let me know, I'd be more than happy to help you out!

Happy micro reading!
