You never know how one day you spend with your child will affect their life.

When I was 12 years old I spent a day doing a science project with my dad.  It was on the RGB color model.  The RGB color model is an additive color model in which red, green and blue light is added together in different ways to reproduce an array of colors.  Added all together they produce the color white.

I'm not sure why I picked this science project, but I've always been interested in science and of course rainbows are always pretty!  Whenever I would color a picture I always drew a rainbow on it.  With my dad's help and science minded influence, I ended up getting a blue ribbon on my science project and I'll never forget it!  I even remember sitting at the table with him working on how to reproduce white color out of a the color model.  It was all quite fun and interesting!  We used play-doh, flash lights with colored cellophane and and even discussed how the "old school" big screen televisions back in the day used blue, red and green lights to shine upon the screen to make a picture that was really cool back in the 80's!

Through the years I've always been obsessed with the color white.  People ask me what my favorite color is and I tell them it is white.  They look at me like I'm crazy because they do not believe me that white is a color.  White is a blending of all the colors and appears colorless.  Sunlight is white light that is composed of all the colors of the spectrum and a rainbow is proof of that!  Thus my obsession with rainbows!  I took this picture of the rainbow above right from our back yard.

The house we live in purely all white.  Of course with the accents of color.  Everything is white just from the mere fact that I LOVE WHITE!  I also love the fact that it can show rainbows in every room from hanging prisms in the windows.

By doing this we create a huge array of rainbows all over house.  Not only to my enjoyment, but also the kids and of course the cats!

Even notice our white carpet!  I LOVE IT!

Our ceilings are covered in rainbows!

We even get to see rainbows when cook in the microwave!

Once in a while we even get rainbows on the timeout chair, but not today.  But it is white for a reason.  Calming and reflective of all things colorful and positive.

We now decorate our house with mostly white decor.  Our past house had every wall painted, gray carpet (dumb idea) and was very dark.  My mood was dark every time I walked into it.  I felt like it was a dungeon.  We had to turn on all the lights just to see in the daytime!  We had no sunshine, no light and definitely no rainbows.  It was nicely decorated, but it just was not me.  I didn't know what was just me.  I thought Pottery Barn was me.  But come to find out, it's just the new house guide to making you think you know what you like. As I get older, I definitely am figuring out what is more me and why.  I hope I can ensure my kids to know what is just them and why.  My daughter dresses herself every day in the most non-matching outfits she can find and I do not care.  We don't look like we grace the cover of any magazines, but we do dress to reflect our feelings and moods.  Thus bringing me to  the piece de resistance....

My selection of all white clothes!  I could never figure out why I was so obsessed with white clothes.  I am constantly made fun of for my multiple white outfits, but for some reason they just make me feel good.  Now I know why.  It is a reflection of color.  It doesn't absorb color like black and dark colors.  It reflects, it gives, it brings light into a sometime dark and gloomy place, mood.  It reminds me of things I enjoy.  Good times I spend with people, good things I learn and know about myself.  And reminds me every day that even one day spent with my dad had a huge impact on how I decorated my house, chose a career in science, and even dress myself!

You never know how one day you spend with your child can impact them.   But sometimes the small things (that may not even be memorable) can become huge things in their lives and shape their personalities.  In this case it was good, and I forever remember spending that day with my dad!  But I'll always be sure to be mindful of how I spend each day with my kids.  Especially after writing this blog.  I never realized that day had such a huge impact on me until just yesterday!

  1. I spent part of my day with my kid yesterday. And with his kid, too. My kid is 30. We watched football & had some beer - you're never too old to spend time with your kids & grandkids!!

  2. Spending part of the day helping my son with his science fair project. We are doing a little bit each day so he can experience the joy of having it done early with planning and preparation and not an all night cram session.
